Reading Response #5 - A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines

July 9, 2011

Pages 103 - 117

Chapters 14 - 15

That's right! Grant is having a baby! These chapters revealed more about Grant's girlfriend, Vivian. Along with that came the news that a baby is on the way. Which Grant appears to have mixed feelings about because he doesn't want his child raised in the same conditions he was raised in. He does not want his child to have to be subjected to believing he is worth less than any other person, nor does he want him to be stuck in a life that seems predetermined by the society. It's understandable that he worries about that.

Grant's aunt also met Vivian for the first time. She scrutinized her for a while before finally accepting that Vivian is a smart woman with strong morals. Aunt Lou made sure Vivian knew never to give up her faith though. Not for anyone, even Grant. She wanted to make sure Vivian kept her faith. Why though? What would it matter? Maybe she believes Vivian is the only chance Grant has at being saved.

It seems that the women in the book have a stronger faith than the men. Why is that? Once again religion is something more feeling based. Women tend to feel things stronger emotionally than men. Men are more physical. Vivian and Aunt Lou might be more accepting to faith solely because of the fact they are women.

I'm beginning to see a connection between these two issues. Why would Grant keep faith in a God, if that God would let Grant suffer the way he is in society? It would be hard for anyone to keep faith. To have belief in someone that loves you, and will take care of you. Someone that is supposed to bless your life. Maybe that is why he quit church. After college he just realized there is no hope, so why even bother.

Once again we see where Gaines' personal life came into play in the novel. Gaines moved to California with him parents. Grant's parents moved to California during the same times Gaines' did. Maybe Gaines is thinking of Grant's life as once he could have lived, had he remained in Louisiana. He is living vicariously through the characters he writes about.

  1. Traditionally, during slavery and even post slavery when tenant farming was big--and almost the same thing as slavery, the Black community greatly identified with the Jews in Egypt. I'm sure this isn't news to you, but I thought I would throw that out there. How is this connection to the Jews of the Bible serve Aunt Lou and Vivian, but not Grant or Jefferson?
